Flight delayed? What US airlines owe you (2026)
US law doesn't require airlines to pay cash compensation for delays. But if a domestic flight is delayed 3 or more hours (6 for international) and you choose not to fly, you're owed a full refund, and many airlines promise meals or hotels for delays they cause.
Last checked October 2026. This is general information, not legal advice. Rules apply to flights to, from, and within the US.
| Cash compensation for a delay | Not required by US law |
|---|---|
| Delay of 3+ hours domestic, 6+ international, and you don't fly | Full cash refund |
| Meals, hotels, rebooking | Depends on the airline's own promises (see DOT dashboard) |
| Long tarmac delays | Separate federal limits on how long you can be held on the plane |
What to do during a long delay
- Check the airline app for free rebooking options before you join the customer service line.
- Ask what the airline will cover. Many promise meal vouchers for long controllable delays and hotels for overnight ones.
- Look up your airline on the DOT airline customer service dashboard to see what it has committed to.
- If you decide not to fly after a significant delay, request your refund in writing.
Flying to or from Europe?
Europe's EU261 rules can require cash compensation for long delays on many flights to and from the EU. US rules don't.
