Spirit Airlines shut down: what happened and what to fly instead
Spirit Airlines stopped flying on May 2, 2026, when it began an orderly wind-down after talks over a roughly $500 million federal bailout fell through. It was the first major US airline in 25 years to go out of business because of financial trouble.
Last checked October 2026.
What happened
Spirit had been seeking federal help to stay in business, but the talks didn't produce a deal. On May 2, 2026, the airline began winding down its operations, effective immediately.
If you had a Spirit ticket
- If you paid by credit card for a flight that never operated, contact your card issuer about disputing the charge.
- Keep your confirmation email, receipt, and any messages from Spirit.
- Travel insurance may cover some costs. Check your policy for "airline bankruptcy" or "financial default" coverage.
What to fly instead
If you liked Spirit's low fares, Frontier and Allegiant work the same way: cheap base fares and paid extras. If you're tired of paying for the overhead bin, Delta, Southwest, and Alaska include a carry-on on every fare.
Ceased operations on May 2, 2026. Survived by its fees, which are presumably still out there somewhere. In lieu of flowers, the family requests $34 for seat selection.
